Boy George withdraws from Jesus Christ Superstar just days before London Palladium return

Singer and performer Boy George has pulled out of his scheduled appearance as King Herod in Jesus Christ Superstar at the London Palladium, only days before he was due to take to the stage. His withdrawal follows controversy surrounding the release of a politically charged new song.

The producers of Jesus Christ Superstar have confirmed that Boy George will no longer appear as King Herod during his scheduled engagement at the London Palladium. The Culture Club star had been due to play the role from 3 to 15 August as one of six guest performers sharing the character throughout the production's limited summer season.

The announcement comes just days before his first scheduled performance and follows widespread criticism over Boy George's recently released song We Will Dance Again. Written in response to the 2023 Hamas attack on the Nova music festival in Israel, the track expresses support for Israel while criticising sections of the pro-Palestinian movement, prompting significant backlash on social media.

According to statements released by his management, the decision was made after careful consideration and out of respect for both the production and fellow cast members. They said Boy George did not want the controversy surrounding him to overshadow the musical or distract audiences from the performances.

The London Palladium production, directed by Timothy Sheader, stars Sam Ryder as Jesus, Tyrone Huntley as Judas and Desmonda Cathabel as Mary Magdalene. Throughout the run, the role of King Herod has been shared by a series of high-profile guest stars, including Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Simon Russell Beale, Richard Armitage, Layton Williams and Julian Clary.

The production has already confirmed that Richard Armitage will step in to play King Herod on 3 August, with further casting updates for the remainder of Boy George's scheduled performances expected shortly. Audiences are advised that producers cannot guarantee the appearance of any specific performer.
