Disney announced the project at the D23 Expo
The story of The Greatest Showman stage musical is based on the 2017 movie which tells the story of P.T. Barnum, the founder of Barnum & Bailey Circus. The movie, directed by Michael Gracey, starred Hugh Jackman, featured Zendaya, Zac Effron, Michelle Williams, Rebecca Ferguson, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Keala Settle.
The movie and the soundtrack were a massive hit in the cinemas. The soundtrack features 11 original songs written by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul and was nominated for an Oscar. A second album was released a year later. They also wrote Dear Evan Hansen, which won the Best Musical Tony Award in 2017.
