Wicked to make its Hungarian premiere at the Szeged Open-Air Festival in 2026

The global musical phenomenon Wicked will finally receive its Hungarian premiere in August 2026, when the spectacular production arrives at the Szeged Open-Air Festival with a star-studded cast and direction by Szente Vajk.

The internationally acclaimed musical Wicked will make its long-awaited Hungarian premiere in August 2026 as part of the renowned Szeged Open-Air Festival. Staged on the impressive Dóm Square stage, the production will be directed by acclaimed Hungarian theatre-maker Szente Vajk, bringing one of the world's most beloved musicals to Hungarian audiences for the very first time.

Based on the untold story of the witches of Oz, Wicked explores the unlikely friendship between the misunderstood, green-skinned Elphaba and the popular and charming Glinda. Far more than a prequel to The Wizard of Oz, the musical is a powerful story of friendship, acceptance, courage and challenging prejudice.

Since its Broadway premiere in 2003, Wicked has become one of the biggest success stories in musical theatre history. The production has won more than 100 international awards, been performed in over 100 cities across 25 countries, translated into 13 languages and seen by almost 65 million people worldwide.

The show's popularity reached new heights following the hugely successful 2024 film adaptation starring Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda, introducing a new generation to the magical world of Oz.

Leading the Hungarian production will be Stéphanie Schlesser as Elphaba and Tóth Angelika as Glinda, alongside Koltai-Nagy Balázs as Fiyero, Udvaros Dorottya as Madame Morrible, Feke Pál and Hevér Gábor sharing the role of the Wizard, Csonka András as Doctor Dillamond and Puskás-Dallos Péter as Boq. The production will feature the invited orchestra, dance company and musical ensemble of the Erkel Theatre, with choreography by Túri Lajos Péter, musical direction by Károly Kati and spectacular set and costume design by Kentaur.

Wicked will be performed on the iconic Dóm Square stage during the 2026 Szeged Open-Air Festival, marking a major milestone for Hungarian musical theatre fans eager to experience this global phenomenon live.
