Andrew Lloyd Webber: A Career in Crisis and Reinvention

The Really Useful Group announced it is changing its company name to LW Entertainment as it unveils ambitious plans for its most iconic shows including The Phantom of the Opera, CATS, Jesus Christ Superstar, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Evita, Sunset Boulevard, and Starlight Express.

Andrew Lloyd Webber, legendary composer behind musicals like The Phantom of the Opera and Cats, was talking about his challenges, successes and plans in a Variety Interview earlier this week.

He faced a major turning point during and after the Covid-19 in his carrier: his six London venues, together with all other theatres had to shut down, cutting off all sources of income. Following that, personal tragedy struck: his son Nicholas died of cancer just two days after Bad Cinderella opened on Broadway in 2023. The show received poor reviews and closed after just three months.

But rather than retreat, Andrew Lloyd Webber used the upheaval to reinvent both his artistic direction and business strategy.

On the creative field, he decided to collaborate with bold, new generation directors. We can see, how this decision is giving a new life to his musicals. Sunset Blvd. won a Tony-Award in 2024, Evita is the most talked musical on the West End right now and The Phantom of the Opera reimagined version Masquerade will give audiences a more intimate experience of the legendary love story. He even agreed that the creatives of Cats: The Jellicle Ball transfer the musical to a brand-new experience, which celebrates drag and ballroom culture.

On the business field, Covid-19 raised a question, how the company can have more financial stability. In order to achieve this, Andrew Lloyd Webber rebranded his company from The Really Useful Group to LW Entertainment, aiming to expand beyond theatre. There are various plans from film and TV adaptations (including a potential new Phantom movie and Jesus Christ Superstar remake), doing a Phantom-inspired anime series, publishing a YA novel Our Strange Duet based on Phantom to gaming, fashion, and consumer products.

But Andrew Lloyd Webber is not done creating, he is still composing new music. It’s already confirmed that he’s nearly finished writing The Illusionist, based on the 2006 Edward Norton film, aiming for a 2027 London premiere.

At 77, instead of cashing out like other musicians by selling his catalog, he remains deeply involved in shaping his legacy. He sees value in retaining creative control and building something that his children (all of whom are involved in the business) can continue.
