Geno Segers will no longer join the Broadway cast of Hadestown, less than a week after his casting as Hades was announced. The production confirmed that Segers and the show's producers had mutually agreed that he would step away from the role following criticism surrounding his past social media activity.

Segers had been set to make his Broadway debut from 1 September as part of a new principal company. The incoming cast includes Norbert Leo Butz as Hermes, Amber Iman as Persephone, Kayko as Orpheus and Jasmin Savoy Brown as Eurydice.

Following the casting announcement, social media users circulated older videos and posts in which Segers expressed views on transgender issues. The material generated significant online criticism, with many fans urging the production to reconsider the casting.

In a statement, the producers confirmed that Segers would no longer appear in the Tony Award-winning musical, describing the decision as mutual. No further details were provided, and a replacement for the role of Hades is expected to be announced shortly.

Featuring music, lyrics and book by Anaïs Mitchell and direction by Rachel Chavkin, Hadestown remains one of Broadway's most celebrated musicals. The acclaimed production continues its run at the Walter Kerr Theatre while preparations continue for the arrival of the new cast on 1 September.
