Holy Harmonies: The Sparkling Budapest Premiere of Sister Act

The musical is running at the Erkel Theatre periodically from 14th November

The long-anticipated Budapest premiere of Apáca Show (the Hungarian staging of Sister Act) opened at the historic Erkel Színház on 14 November 2025. Directed by Vajk Szente, this production marks a major moment in the theatre’s renewed focus on large-scale musicals in its 2025–2026 season.

Headlining the cast is Anna Peller as Deloris van Cartier, the charismatic nightclub singer turned reluctant nun. She is joined by Juli Básti and Erika Náray, who alternate in the role of Mother Superior, while Pál Feke plays the well-meaning Detective Eddie Souther, and Bence Brasch embodies the gangster boss Curtis Jackson.

True to its roots, the show preserves the heart and humor of the original ‘90s film: Deloris witnesses a crime and is hidden in a convent for protection, where she upends the quiet monastic life by revitalizing the choir. With its energetic blend of gospel, disco, and Alan Menken’s unforgettable score, the Hungarian version promises both laughter and inspiration.

The production’s staging is both vibrant and polished, with dazzling set design and costumes elevating the “sacred meets secular” contrast, while the cast delivers powerful vocals in heartfelt solos and ensemble gospel numbers. Early buzz suggests this could become one of the Erkel’s standout musicals of the season — a joyous, feel-good experience rooted in melody, community, and a touch of nuns’ rebellion.
