Jesus Christ Superstar Announces Full Cast for Theatre Royal Drury Lane
Sam Ryder returns as Jesus alongside Tyrone Huntley as Judas, while an extraordinary line-up of stars including Matt Bomer, Michael Ball, Rob Brydon and Layton Williams take on the role of King Herod.
The full cast has been announced for Jesus Christ Superstar, which will transfer to London’s Theatre Royal Drury Lane this autumn following its sold-out summer season at the London Palladium.
The celebrated musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice begins performances at Drury Lane on 16 October 2026, with the limited season running until 9 January 2027, ahead of a UK tour.
Sam Ryder will continue in the role of Jesus, following his acclaimed West End debut in the production. He will be joined by Tyrone Huntley, who returns as Judas after his performances at the London Palladium.
The principal cast also includes Desmonda Cathabel as Mary Magdalene, David Thaxton as Pontius Pilate, Bob Harms as Caiaphas and Phil King as Peter. Matty J will play Annas and serve as alternate Judas on Thursdays, while Eric Lewis joins the company as Simon. Matthew Harvey will be standby Jesus.
A spectacular line-up of King Herods
One of the most talked-about elements of the Theatre Royal Drury Lane season will once again be the rotating casting of King Herod.
The role will be played by an impressive collection of performers throughout the run. Matt Bomer opens the Drury Lane season as Herod from 16 to 31 October, making his West End debut in the production.
He will be followed by Rob Brydon (2–7 November), Reece Shearsmith (9–14 November), Bob The Drag Queen (16–21 November), Michael Ball (23 November–5 December), Simon Russell Beale (7–12 December), Omid Djalili (14–19 December) and Layton Williams (21 December–2 January 2027). One final King Herod, scheduled for 4–9 January, is still to be announced.
The eclectic line-up brings together film and television stars, comedians, musical theatre favourites and some of Britain's most acclaimed stage performers, promising a different interpretation of Herod throughout the season.
Tim Sheader's acclaimed production
Directed by Tim Sheader, with choreography by Drew McOnie and design by Tom Scutt, the production offers a contemporary staging of Lloyd Webber and Rice's iconic rock musical.
Jesus Christ Superstar tells the story of the final days of Jesus Christ's life, unusually presenting the events largely through the eyes of Judas Iscariot. The score includes such enduring numbers as I Don't Know How to Love Him, Gethsemane, Superstar and King Herod's Song.
The Drury Lane engagement marks a particularly significant moment for the musical: according to producer Michael Harrison, it is the first time a Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber musical has played at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane.
Following the London season, the production will embark on a UK tour beginning in Manchester in February 2027, bringing this new production of the classic rock musical to audiences around the country.
With Sam Ryder continuing as Jesus, Tyrone Huntley returning as Judas and a remarkable succession of King Herods, Jesus Christ Superstar at Theatre Royal Drury Lane looks set to be one of the most star-studded musical theatre events of the autumn.
