Spamalot at the Queen’s Theatre in Hornchuch
Shenfield Operatic Society presents Spamalot at the Queen’s Theatre
Spamalot retells the legendary tale of King Arthur’s quest to find the Holy Grail. The 2005 Broadway production was nominated for fourteen Tony Awards of which it won three, including Best Musical, and was followed by two successful West End runs.
Inspired by the classic comedy film Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Spamalot features shenanigans including a chorus line of dancing divas, legless knights, men in tights, killer rabbits and a flatulent Frenchman.
Throughout the show Arthur, travelling with his servant Patsy, recruits several knights to accompany him on his quest including Sir Belvedere, Sir Robin, Sir Lancelot and Sir Galahad. Besides the rabbits and farting Frenchman, they meet such characters as the Lady of the Lake, Prince Herbert, Tim the Enchanter, Not Dead Fred, the Black Knight and the Knights who say Ni.
After arriving in a Las Vegas-inspired Camelot, the knights are contacted by the voice of God who wants them to search for the Holy Grail. After some silly encounters and some surprising discoveries, Arthur and the knights end up finding the Grail in an unexpected place.
Shenfield Operatic Society, known as SOS, is an amateur dramatics society in Essex, specialising in musical theatre. The society was founded in 1962 when a small group of teachers formed the St Martin’s Operatic Society at St Martin’s Secondary School for Boys. With an initial fund of two shillings and sixpence (around 12.5p!), they set out to produce South Pacific which they performed in the school hall in March 1962.
The show will run only from 24 to 27 January.
