The Phantom’s farewell to Broadway
After 35 years The Phantom of the Opera was played last time on 16 April at the Majestic Theatre.
One of the most successful Andrew Lloyd Webber's show, The Phantom of the Opera is closing after 35 years and 13,981 performances. The Phantom of the Opera is the longest-running show in Broadway history. The show opened in January 1988 and 20 million tickets were sold for over $1.3 billion.
During the 35-year run, the show created approximately 6,500 jobs, including 400 actors.
Unfortunately for the show and the audience, according to producer Cameron Mackintosh, the Phantom was losing money, which resulted in the decision of closing the show.
For the final performance, the show was offering a special lottery for the lucky ones. On the final weekend, the ticket prices were going out of the roof on third-party resell sites. According to the news, there were tickets sold for nearly $4,000.
But there is hope that the last performance is only a temporary farewell from Broadway. In a recent interview with Spectrum News NY1 Andrew Lloyd Webber hinted „that chandelier will fall for the last time in the middle of the, well, the end of the first act, that it will rise again somewhere in New York–much sooner than people might think”.
