A Chorus Line in Hamburg
The musical will premiere at the First Stage Theatre in Hamburg on 10 June
The musical takes the audience into the exciting world of an audition, in which the hopeful applicants have to go to their emotional limits. Eight coveted ensemble roles for a new Broadway play are up for grabs, and charismatic choreographer Zach not only looks for outstanding dancers but also challenges the talents to reveal their innermost feelings. The drama unfolds as the protagonists gradually reveal their life stories – sometimes defiantly, sometimes using humour as a protective veil, and then again in relentless honesty, which makes the emotions all the more touching.
Love, intimacy and the search for one's own identity and a place in this world are at the heart of this timeless musical, which was made into a film in 1985 with Michael Douglas in the lead role. It seduces the audience to get carried away at some point amid the diverse emotions to an enthusiastic "Oh yes, I know that". The fascinating highlight of the musical is the almost impossible love story between Zach and Cassie, which adds an extra touch of drama and passion to the play. So it's no wonder that A Chorus Line broke the record for the longest-running musical in New York after its premiere in 1975.
